The Role

This Engineering position is for NNS Quality Assurance Engineering Level I Team. The Engineer’s role is to ensure NNS procedures and processes meet government specifications (e.g. NAVSEA 0948-LP-045-7010), contractual requirements, program needs, and provide end users with a procedure that is easy to use and understand. The Engineer will collaborate with various stakeholders and mentor members of the Quality Assurance Engineering Materials Team to ensure procedures and processes meet specification requirements for Level I material. Additional responsibilities include resolution of material deficiencies, support generation of departures from specification, and writing letters for formal acceptance of NNS practices.

Normal daily functions to include:

Revise material procedures that govern Level I material requirements and material handling processes.

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to create robust material processes.

Perform continuous improvement actions to close gaps within NNS processes and procedures to ensure programs continue to meet requirements.

Review procedure updates performed within and outside of the team to verify requirements are satisfied.

Write letters to the government for significant Level I material issues for various NNS programs.

Collect, Organize, and Maintain important documents and references for the Quality Assurance Engineering Materials Team.

Assist NNS Training department in development of various trainings for Level I material requirements.

Be the Subject Matter Expert at NNS for non-nuclear Level I material and answer various questions from internal and external stakeholders regarding material requirements.

Provide support during audits performed at NNS.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

A qualified candidate will have an understanding of various levels of material control, general knowledge of material storage processes, understanding of receipt inspection requirements, familiarity with material specifications, knowledge of ship specifications, and basic understanding of waterfront practices. Candidate shall have procedure writing experience and be able to communicate effectively with various departments at NNS. Candidate shall have a desire to learn new processes and desire to improve existing. Familiarity with SAP, SharePoint, letter databases, and record retention processes is also desired. Ability to obtain a DoD Clearance.
