About Evansville State Hospital :

Evansville State Hospital is one of the Indiana State Psychiatric Hospitals who are committed to the mission of Hope and Recovery. Residing on 88 acres on the east side of Evansville, Ind., our facility provides medical treatment for chronic mental illness and substance abuse disorders from our dedicated team of psychiatrists and advanced practice professionals. Active Treatment helps our patients achieve their goals directed towards living in the most non-restrictive environment possible.

Our team of professionals assist our patients in the treatment process involving medical staff, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation therapy and our community integration program. Evansville State Hospital continues to maintain accreditation through The Joint Commission as an Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital as well as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services certification as a Psychiatric Medicare/Medicaid Hospital.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Conduct treatment unit meetings to ensure proper assessment of problems of individual patients to determine goals and to establish timetables and patient/resident care plans to meet treatment objectives.

  • Review background histories of all new patients/residents and assign them to appropriate staff.

  • Formulate overall treatment unit objectives and standards and continuously evaluate appropriateness of objectives and monitors achievement of goals to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of services.

  • Integrate treatment unit programs with other hospitals and community programs and services.

  • Prepare and revise treatment unit procedures manual to cover administrative and clinical procedures and policies.

  • Organize unit staff and work distribution to facilitate treatment programs and goals.

  • Determine training needs and train treatment unit staff regarding new or changed treatment procedures or programs.

  • Maintain contact with courts preparing treatment plan summaries for involuntarily committed patients and testify in competency and guardianship hearings.

  • Meet regularly with unit staff to disseminate information, share and solve treatment problems and define policy and procedures at the unit level.

  • Participate or chair a variety of committee meetings associated with mental health.

  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety of patients through continuous monitoring and ensures effectiveness and success of methods.

  • Review hospital process related to documentation and monitoring for environment of care.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college in Mental Health Rehabilitation or a related area.

  • Four (4) years full-time professional experience and/or direct patient care to person (s) with a developmental, emotional, mentally disability(ies), or related experience.  

OR 

  • Accredited graduate training in any of the following areas may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience, except for the administrative, managerial, or supervisory experience:  Audiology, Behavioral/Social Science, Business Administration, Education, Mental Health Rehabilitation, Mental Health Technology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Pathology, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related area.

OR

  •  Possession of a valid license as a registered nurse may substitute for the required bachelor's degree.

  • Ability to compile, prepare and maintain detailed records and reports.

  • Extensive knowledge of a single professional discipline including the theories, principles, procedures, and new developments involved in the treatment of disabled patients/residents.

  • Specialized knowledge of the causes, nature and treatment of mental illness or mental retardation including therapeutic techniques and concepts and principles of appropriate behavioral sciences.

  • Specialized knowledge of supervisory and management techniques and philosophy of interdisciplinary unit concept.

  • Specialized knowledge of Division of Mental Health Administration (DMHA) rules, regulations, and procedures as well as institution’s policies and established treatment procedures.

  • Practical knowledge of federal and state laws regarding involuntary commitments as well as legal rights of patients/residents and other related precedents.

  • Practical knowledge of certification requirements and standards for facility.

  • Ability to collect and analyze data/statistics and interpret information for appropriate hospital staff. 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
