Eaton Corporation Chief Architect, Embedded Linux in Beachwood, Ohio

Eaton Corporation’s Electrical Sector ($16B Rev) is seeking a Chief Software Architect, Embedded Linux to support embedded engineering within Electrical Sector-Americas ($10B Rev). This position will report directly to the Technical Director, Embedded Controls and Systems. This position can be based remotely within the US, but the preferred locations are Eaton sites in Raleigh, NC, Pittsburgh, PA, Peachtree City, GA, or Waukesha, WI. Relocation is available to one of our preferred locations.

What you’ll do:

We at Eaton are innovating future products with a focus on global sustainability megatrends: Energy Transition, Electrification, and Digital Enablement. In this newly created position, you will drive value within Eaton’s Electrical Sector – Americas, and in conjunction, the global Electrical Sector, by ensuring our embedded engineering teams are utilizing the most up-to-date and robust processes. In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical direction of Embedded Linux systems design and solutions for Electrical Sector - Americas with the support and direction of the technical director. You will work across Divisions and Centers of Excellence (CoE) to drive and deliver the creation and implementation of high-level and low-level embedded and control systems and software architectures, with an emphasis on upper level controls. This person will also help define the general architectural vision that guides the organization, serving as guiding principles across all Eaton stakeholders and engineering teams focused on embedded systems.

Job Responsibilities:

• Mentor and guide engineering teams (Division, ES Global, and Centers of Excellence) to drive standardization, in-sourcing, and the realization of strategic initiatives

• Help build the five (5) year technology roadmap on controls and embedded systems by working with the Divisions and the CoEs, driving adoption of new technologies and modern tools – focusing on enabling digital products and services

• Transform how Eaton approaches systems engineering by establishing and implementing industry-leading Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) agile best-practice standards to deliver on mission-critical, critical-infrastructure Controls and Embedded Systems applications controlling complex systems

• Apply / understand industry best practices in Continuous Improvement / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) workflows as they apply to embedded and controls component use cases and guide divisions at the direction of the Sector Leadership and the CoEs to realization, especially in respect to how multitudes of operating platforms and controls application middleware is consumed

• Develop Embedded and Controls component, system, and solution Minimal Viable Product (MVP) prototypes through Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4, leveraging Customer Readiness Level (CRL) analysis in collaboration with stakeholders and direct customer interaction

• Apply understanding of organization goals/strategies in defining embedded and controls systems architectures, from MCU/SoC/microprocessor selection though controls and digital software approaches, in collaboration across the divisions and related CoEs

• Drive the adoption of systems engineering solutions by collaborating with and influencing internal and external stakeholders - Collaborate with commercial organizations across Divisions

• Design training program for current and new embedded software engineers in Test-Driven Development (TDD) and other best design practices for software engineering

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree from Accredited Institution Required

• Minimum of 10 years of progressive professional experience with a focus on high performance embedded / related applications

• Minimum of 8 years of software technology experience in embedded controls design, development, and testing

• A minimum of 5 years of experience leading/managing high complexity agile software projects with an emphasis in embedded and complex systems.

• Minimum 5 years of experience building on embedded Linux systems

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with products within the energy/power or industrial/manufacturing industry

• Project/Program Management; Waterfall and other development methodologies; SOLID, Twelve Factor Apps, Continuous Integration/Continuous Test

• Prior experience with Waterfall and other development methodologies is preferred

Skills:

• Communication / Presentation skills, leading in culturally diverse situations

• Expert level understanding of embedded controls design, embedded controls development, communication protocol design/standards/applications, multi-controller integration, middleware, and systems design, analysis, diagnostics, and testing

• Experience with BusyBox, Yocto, EdgeX, Realtime Linux

The expected annual salary range for this role is $142499.97 - $208999.96 a year. This role is also eligible for a variable incentive program.
